Door Security Solution

As I travel around and see a variety of businesses I always find security solutions that businesses have developed and implemented themselves.  The pictures in this article show one security solution a business implemented after someone broke into their warehouse.  The pictures show the interior view of one of the doors in the warehouse.  If you look closely, you will see that the business basically took some strips of steel and a cabinet handle and made an interior bar-type lock that they engage during non-business hours.  The steel bars are bolted to the door, and when the handle is turned, the steel bars move into openings that someone cut into the door frame.  This secures the door to the door frame.

The main factor that makes this a really effective security measure is that the door hinge pins are secured in place with small allen screws that can only be accessed when the door is open.  The hinge pins cannot easily be removed from the door hinges.  If the door hinge pins could be easily removed, the steel bars would still be in place but the door may give enough that the attacker could pry open the door or door frame.

Also,  if you look at the right side of the door in the pictures, you will see two bolts– one above and one below the door knob.  These bolts are holding a security lock plate in place which reduces the risk of the attacker using a shim to bypass the lock.  In the unlikely case that the attacker bypasses the lock, the steel security bars should still keep the door secure.

As an additional security measure, I would also consider using jamb pins.  If for some reason the hinge pins were removed, the door could not be opened because of the steel bars and the jamb pins.  Obviously,  there are a number of of security solutions or measures that you can implement to secure exterior doors in your business.  One word of caution regarding the security measure this business implemented and any other that you use– make sure that it does not violate any fire or life safety code in your area.

If you have any thoughts regarding this door security solution or have other security measures you have implemented and found successful, please leave a comment and share with other blog readers.
