Strike Plate

A strike plate is a part of a door lock.  It is the metal plate that is attached, usually with screws, to the door jamb (doorStrike Plate frame) and has one or more holes that hold the lock bolt when the lock is engaged.  When the door is closed, the lock bolt extends into the hole which then keeps the door closed.  Refer to the picture for a look at a high security strike plate.

Strike plates also serve a security purpose because they strengthen the door frame or door jamb that surrounds the lock bolt.  When the door frame is of metal construction, this is not so important as it is when the door frame is of wood construction.  When the strike plate is attached to a wood frame or wood door jamb, I would recommend improving security by either installing a high-security strike plate, which you can see an example of it in the above picture, or to install a security door plate.  Refer to the article on security door plate for additional details regarding this type of security measure as well as video explaining how it works.  This article also explains what high-security strike plates are and how they are used.

Both the high security strike plate as well as the security door plate help reduce the risk of someone succeeding in kicking in the door when it is locked.  As I noted in previous articles, make sure you also install quality security locks that are resistant to key bumping and lock-picking to better secure your exterior doors.  The high-security strike plate or door security plate will not prevent all break-in attempts so you must have more than one layer of security while paying attention to the details of protecting your business adequately.
