exterior-hinged-doorDo you have any exterior doors at your business that have hinges on the outside, like the one in this picture? If so, you may be at risk for a simple break-in method. Even though the door is locked, someone can easily remove the hinge pins from the exterior-facing hinges and remove the entire door, allowing easy access. One way of reducing this risk is to use what are called “jamb pins”. Refer to this picture of commercial jamb pins to see what I am talking about.

Basically, these jamb pins are installed by removing a screw from each one of the hinges or at least the top and bottom hinge and inserting or screwing in one of the “jamb pins”. Then, the corresponding screw from the other side of the hinge is removed, allowing the extension pin part of the “jamb pin” to go into the door jamb side of the hinge.

Remember that the hole in the door jamb must be drilled so it is a tight fit for the metal rod. The hole drilled in the door must provide a little space for the rod to move so it is easy to open and shut the door. Refer to the pictures of one of the homemade “jamb pins” I used on an outside storage building where the hinges are located on the exterior of the door.jamb-pins-home

Additional security can also be achieved by using secure hinge pins which are basically hinge pins that are secured in the hinge with the use of a little allen screw that can only be tightened when the door is open. The allen screw is located so it cannot be tampered with from the outside. You can determine if your building has secure hinges by opening an exterior door that has outward facing hinges and see if you can see a little allen screw located on the interior of the hinge. If you don’t, and you do not want to go to the expense of replacing the hinges at this time, make sure you use “jamb pins”. If you use both “jamb pins” and secure hinge pins, you will reduce the chance of success by any criminal that uses this method of attack.

If you want to purchase “jamb pins,” go to www.mbausa.com, a company I have used in the past with great success. Also, you can just Google “jamb pins,” and you will find a variety of sites out there that are selling “jamb pins”.
